South of Morehead- a brief synopsis!

I had all intentions of keeping up with the blog but here it is, December, so here is the brief version of November...

We had a wonderful visit in Morehead City.  Stayed at Capt. Bills Seafood Restaurant on the dock.  It is definitely for shoal draft vessels as we ran aground at low tide as we approached the dock.  In all fairness, it was a lunar low tide too.  No electric or water but that is ok, it was not for the faint of heart climbing off the boat but there was a locked gate in the evening.  All they ask is that you eat in their restaurant and believe me... that was a treat!  The food was great, the prices reasonable and the staff was super friendly too.  John & Diane Poag are the owners, Theresa the Manager, Kami was our waitress both evenings with help from Christopher & Jennifer the Trainee too.  We did not get to meet the kitchen staff but they sure put out some great food.   My friend Jo Ruth lives in Morehead and it was nice to spend some time with her.  Should you ever find yourself on the Morehead City waterfront be sure to stop in at Capt. Bills!

We again went to a farmers market and drove about Beaufort & Spooner's Creek too.  There is a front coming through so we decided to head down to Mile Hammock.  As mentioned before, that is in the middle of Camp LeJune, home of the USMC.  Our next real stop was at Southport, NC were were docked at The Provision Company.  Again, you can dock there overnight if you eat there.  Hummmm, starting to see a pattern here!  We had not stopped in Southport since 2002 and the town has been discovered.  It was still a very nice stay.  We decided to do something different and took a right on the Waccamaw River almost to Conway!  Back in 2002 our friend Matt bought some sausage at Bucksport Marina that was fantastic.  Over the years we discovered that it comes from a butcher shop in Conway.  We have been there by rental car and it is a real butcher shop!  You can even purchase a whole pig or a side of beef if you are so inclined!  There is a 35ft bridge so we did not get into Conway proper but it was a treat and we got a lot of stares from the locals as not too many cruising boats head that way.

Once again from Georgtown, SC I rented a car to return to Virginia for a doctors' appointment. Did not stay long and did not have the time to see any of my friends other than John & Julie Cobb that I stayed with.  The only person I was able to visit with was my stepson Dave and even smallest grandbaby Isabella was asleep when I arrived.  The rhumatologist (the reason for the trip) was a waste of time!  So ag=fter the return trip it was an overnight in Charleston, 2 days to Beaufort, SC (bew-fort not bo-fort) where we saw our good friends Richard & Carol on Kilissa and Bobby & Francie on Barefootin.  It was getting cold & since we do not like cold we decided to bypass the state of Georgia and head offshore to Fernandina Beach, FL.  In bypassing the whole state it meant that we would not be seeing all of our friends in Savannah and that we would be too far south for my cousin to come for a visit as well.  OK guys, we will stop in the spring!

We dropped the hook off of the town of Fernandina and went to shore the next day.  Everytime that we have stopped there I was unable to walk the town but this year has been wonderfully different!  Fernandina is a cute town that has been newly "discovered" but still has its charm.  Again we met up wth the Barefootin's and had lunch.  It seems that I spend more time with my cruising friends than with my land friends but then again, we are not in Norfolk very much either!  Of course there was a stop in Jacksonville Beach to see our friend Rob Ball but we only stayed 1 night. We saw an old friend -Michael - on Pagan Chant along the ICW and since he is a single hander we invited him over for dinner that night.  It was great to see him after 3-4 years!  We also met some newbies, Rich & Janice on Kalisto who are having the time of their lives.  Hey, we were all newbies once!

From there it was on to another favorit stop, St. Augustine.  See last years post for photos if you are new to this blog.  Our friends Paul & Dawn have a condo there as well as their boat and will be joining the exodus to the Bahamas after Christmas.  They took us to a great restaurant on Anastasia Island called Balck Fly.  The owner is an avid fly & bone fisherman as well as a renound artist.  The food & drink were top notch an we hope to go back on our next trip through.  There was music & a bofire at the oceanfront state park that night so off the 4 of us went.  It was small but a great deal of fun.  Thanks Paul & Dawn, it was great fun as usual.  When we stopped a few days later in Titusville we had every intention of spending some time with Steve & Aggie from S/V Nellie Bly but the weather refused to cooperate.  It was cold, windy & damp and the thought of a long dink ride to town was not very appealing.  Next stop south was Cocoa Village - always a great stop but again, we only stayed 1 night.  We did get to see Gary, Katheryn & Bob, Roland and his parents along with Steve & Anne.  We packed a lot of fun into one dinner at Roberto's!  Great Cuban food should you be in Cocoa Beach.

We day hopped on down to Hobe Sound and found a great place to drop the anchor for our Thanksgiving feast.  Turkey, stuffing, sweet potato, green beans, and homemade mince pie for dessert!

From there it was onto North Lake Worth and the obligatory stop at West Marine only to find out my Associate Status was gone and we had to pay retail for a new Icom 802 (ham radio).  There is also a brand new Trader Joe's within walking distance of the north anchorage!  It had only been open a few weeks and the place was still mobbed.  We moved onto West Palm Beach as Richard & Carol  called to tell us how great it was.  That is very true and the subject of the next entry
